Fabulous, elegant Audi 100 Sport, resplendent in unmarked Satin Black Metallic paintwork. Rare, quick, comfortable, economical and well equipped. Audi Sport enhancements include tuned suspension, full width red rear lights and Audi Sport badging

It seems a long time ago that Audi's third-generation 100 burst onto the scene and left the competition speechless. It challenged Mercedes and BMW's technical leadership in the luxury car sector for the first time. Innovations included stunning aerodynamics, flush glazing and lower weight, yet better crash performance than the previous 100. Rivals makers suddenly found their own models lacking a certain amount of that precious new commodity, Vorsprung Durch Technik. Audi moved the frontiers of saloon car design and created the businessman’s express, a car by which all others were judged. That it looked so elegant and beautiful was a definite bonus.

The previous two 100s had failed to gain much of a foothold in the UK luxury market. Styling had been conservative and, five-cylinder engines apart, there was little for buyers to remember about these worthy, but dull, contenders.

The 1982 car changed all that at a stroke and began the long process of image building that led to Audis being thought of as true luxury competitors.

A major step forward when the wraps were pulled off this car in September 1982 at the Paris motor show where it upstaged not only the home-grown Citroen BX debut, but also that of that other influential Eighties car, the Ford Sierra.

Lightweight and superior aerodynamics were allied to the efficient five-cylinder engine to produce an executive car with unrivalled pace and economy for its size. Significant for being the first production saloon with opening flush glazing, which helped achieve its record-breaking 0.30Cd.

Under the skin, it was much the same as the old Audi 100. So it shared the longitudinally mounted five-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive layout, so all very efficient. But a genuine step forward, leaving the opposition trailing in its wake.

There was a rather under-powered 1.8-litre four-cylinder model to open the range. Above this was a 2.0-litre model, the CC and then the sporting CS we see here in rare Sport trim. This had the 2.2-litre five-cylinder 138bhp engine and was by far the best model, with its strong performance, good equipment levels and excellent economy.

The Audi 100 was a discerning choice, with the 100 Sport aimed at those discerning owners who wanted a sporting edge to their luxury motoring without compromising on refinement.

Audi played on their 1-2 victory in the 1987 Safari Rally in tuning the suspension specifically to the 100 Sport, shortening and stiffening the road springs by 15mm asking with firmer shock absorber settings and wider tyres. They succeeded where modern manufacturers so often fail. This is a sporting saloon which also rides incredibly well and is so comfortable with refinement levels very high.

Performance is brisk, with 0-50mph in 6.4 seconds onto a top speed of 126mph when legal and impressive stopping power from disc brakes all round ventilated at the front. Imagine this on the autobahn back in the late 80s just gliding past most other traffic, even better able to do with the massive 80 litre fuel tank.

Available as manual gearbox only (which is a delight to use) the whole Sport package is completed with height adjustable Sports Seats, a subtle Audi Sport badge on the boot and a full-width red rear light cluster which incorporates the (original dealer) registration plate and boot lock. To find either of the two latter items intact is very rare indeed. This stunning Satin Black Metallic example (Tornado Red or Stone Grey were the only other two colours available) is further enhanced by the dealer applied Audi Sport stripes which look just so right.

Equipment levels were high with central locking, on-board trip computer, electric door mirrors and windows, front fog lights and tilt/slide sunroof. There are no missing pixels, dead displays or blown bulbs and everything works, including the original Blaupunkt Toronto Radio/Cassette.

A turbo diesel engine first appeared in September 1985, but sales were always slow, perhaps because the petrol-powered cars were so economical anyway. Importantly, the same year, the entire range received galvanised bodies and a comprehensive anti-perforation warranty. Coupled with exceptional performance, safety and quality levels for its class the Audi 100 was born a classic.

The 100 has always been like a breath of fresh air, compared to driving other heavy and stodgy rivals. The controls are light and precise, noise levels are really low due to that ultra-smooth shape and the handling is very good and the ride super smooth and the steering feel exceptionally good. The legendary 5-cylinder engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a most lovely action, clothed in very high quality Satin Black Metallic paintwork. The Audi Sport badging really sets the car off. There are only 17 Audi 100 Sport examples left in the UK with 16 of these showing as SORN. We have here a low mileage, low owner unmolested car in stunning original condition.

We have the original brochures stamped by the original supplying dealer, Silver Street Motors in Taunton. This includes the incredibly rare specific Audi 100 Sport 4-page high gloss brochure and technical specification.

Indeed the Taunton dealership was the first registered keeper of the car registered in February 1988. 6 months on it was registered to a Mr. Broom locally and on his passing in February 2006 to his wife. In 2017 the estate sold the car to the last registered keeper.

Silver Street Motors, later Silver Street Audi and subsequently Taunton Audi serviced the car by the book until 2004 at 11188, 19673, 24211, 29742, 34372, 37047, 39514, 42355, 45841, 58577, 62427, 66765, 69038, 72051, 75091 miles.

That the car currently wears only 89900 miles should give every confidence as to its mechanical condition clearly backed up by the condition of the bodywork and interior and chassis. It really is exceptional. The car had an independent service at 82788 miles and the most recent owner carried out their own service on acquiring the car in 2017 also dealing with the few MOT advisories that had previously presented themselves and fitting new and correct 205/60VR15 tyres all round to the 7J x 15 alloy wheels, in this case Ronal Alloys as also fitted to the top of the range Audi 100 CS quattro of the period.

Although this car had very healthy looking fluids, we have carried out a service for peace of mind including oil and filter, air filter, brake fluid and coolant flush and change.

All original handbooks in original Audi wallet and period brochures are with the car along with a full set of keys with dealer keyring, original dealer number plates in superb condition and dealer sticker in rear window.

Perfectly usable today and in many ways more comfortable and easier to drive and live with than equivalent offerings new today.
